Betsy Bell Wilderness Park
If you love hiking and exploring nature, you can take a trip to Betsy Bell Wilderness Park, located at 525 Betsy Bell Rd. Nearby is the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, one of the city’s most famous sights. Catholicism was not very prominent in Virginia until after the French Revolution, when Irish Catholic immigrants began flocking to the region. In 1845, St. Francis of Assisi’s cathedral was built and dedicated to the patron saint of the Catholic faith. Visit the interior and exterior of this impressive structure.
The Frederick House offers award-winning accommodations, excellent cuisine, and gorgeous surroundings. It has all of the amenities of a high-end hotel, but with the gracious hospitality of a bed and breakfast. There are 23 guest rooms in the Frederick House, which are situated in seven historic houses within two blocks of each other. The Frederick House is within walking distance of many local attractions, including the Staunton Museum of Art.
Visitors can take a breathtaking view of Staunton and the surrounding areas from the observation platform at the park’s summit. From there, you can view the Shenandoah Valley, Waynesboro, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although the summit has minimal picnic facilities, you can still enjoy the spectacular view. The trail to the summit can be reached by driving up Betsy Bell Road from Greenville Avenue, which winds up the western side of the mountain.
For a fascinating tour of the area, you can also visit the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library. This library is located at 20 N Coalter St. and is home to a 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine. You can also view an exhibit on World War I trenches, complete with authentic uniforms and weapons. There are also several activities for younger visitors, including a fun scavenger hunt in the historic gardens.
The Staunton Camera Heritage Museum is a must-see attraction for photography enthusiasts. This museum showcases a diverse collection of vintage cameras that trace photography’s evolution from the late nineteenth century to today. Many of these vintage cameras come from private collections, and each has a fascinating history. You can explore the museum at your leisure with the help of a self-guided audio tour. The museum is growing each week, as more vintage cameras are donated from around the world.
For a fun activity, you can also visit the American Shakespeare Center, which is modeled after similar theaters from Shakespeare’s time. This center offers 52 performances each year. It uses two rotating ensembles and 16 titles. For those interested in the history of Shakespeare, you can even take up a course at the American Shakespeare Center. Located at 10 S Market St. in Staunton, you’ll find a wide variety of lodging options in the city.
